The commercialisation and professionalisation of sport over the past 10-15 years offers graduates a wide range of dynamic management opportunities within a multi-billion dollar industry that continues to grow exponentially.

With 5 million Australians participating in organised sport and over 8000 employing sport organisations expending more than $8 billion there are a vast range of continuing employment opportunities for graduates. This strong, industry-based course is designed to provide students with the essential knowledge, competencies and professional attitudes required by middle and senior levels of management in a range of sport agencies.

It offers career opportunities in professional sport organisations; state, national and international sport associations; sport marketing and promotion companies; sport event management companies; sport tourism and adventure sport operators; state departments for sport and recreation; sport facilities; and in sport technology and support services management.

Course structure

Core Program

The core program consists of 210 credit points. Students must complete the following units:

Supplementary Program

Students must complete a supplementary program of 150 credit points. Students can select from the following options:

  • an 10 unit supporting Major
  • an 8 unit Major/supporting Major and 2 electives
  • a 6 unit Minor and a 4 unit Minor
  • a 6 unit Minor and 4 electives
  • two 4 unit Minors and 2 electives

Professional associations

The Bachelor of Sport Management is recognised by the Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand Inc. (SMANZ) and by the Australia and New Zealand Association of Leisure Studies Inc. (ANZALS).
