Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) / Edith Cowan University

PASS is a program where students work together to consolidate understanding, reinforce key concepts, and develop effective study strategies. PASS consists of weekly one-hour, non-compulsory sessions led by 'Peer Leaders', students who have excelled at the subject in the past. PASS is provided for all students who want to improve their understanding of course material and improve their grades.

PASS is for everyone! Whether you are a top performer or could use some improvement, you will benefit from the skills and understanding you will gain from attending PASS.

Why is PASS different? For the student, PASS is a chance to get together in small groups with other students in the subject to compare notes, discuss important topics, and to develop strategies for studying and learning. At each session a Peer Leader will be on hand to guide students through the course material. Sessions are designed to be informal, flexible, and fun! The focus of each session will be determined by the needs of the group. PASS is a valuable opportunity for students to seek help and advice in a friendly, relaxed environment.

Need some proof? Studies at other Australian Universities demonstrate that if you attend PASS regularly, chances are much higher that you will earn a better grade than if you did not attend. With each session you attend, you will be less likely to fail the subject. You will also develop more effective ways to learn. This should help you to be more successful in your other subjects too.

PASS at ECU is based on Supplemental Instruction (SI). SI was initially developed by Dr Deanna Martin at the University of Missouri - Kansas City over 30 years ago. Since then, SI has spread to some 30 countries around the world. SI targets subjects with higher than desirable failure rates and / or subjects which are perceived by the students as being very difficult. The program assists students with mastering and integrating subject content and learning and study strategies.
