Indigenous students recognised during NAIDOC week
One of the 2008 Vice-Chancellor's Indigenous Australian Scholarships has been awarded to Criminology and Justice student Julie Pickett. The scholarship is valued at $2,500 per semester and is available to students of Indigenous Australian descent who make a valued contribution to, and demonstrate leadership within the Indigenous and University communities. Business and Law students help support local community
An initiative between the City of Wanneroo and the Business and Law Faculty at Edith Cowan University aims to develop business skills of both students and local businesses through a mutually beneficial program called The Innovation Lab.
The project will focus course assignments on addressing genuine business needs. Business and Law students will obtain real world experience whilst bringing needed support to local businesses. Full Story >>

ECU educating Zambia's leaders
The First Lady of Zambia Maureen Mwanawasa is pursuing an MBA (International) at the Australian Institute of Business and Technology, an offshore partner delivering Edith Cowan University courses to the African Sub-Saharan region. Maureen is one of the most recognised faces in Zambia today being a figurehead in health throughout the country. The First Lady's credentials include the founder of the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative and president of Organisation of African First Ladies Fight against HIV/AIDS.
We wish the First Lady the very best in her studies.
$338,000 grant for easy access on-line courses
The faculty has recently been successful in gaining $338,000 from the ECU Strategic Funding Program to fund the development of an online resource project for the Bachelor of Laws, Graduate Certificate Business (Project Management) and Graduate Diploma Business (Project Management).
This initiative aims to increase accessibility of these courses to students by offering units via off-campus study, improving the faculty's ability to engage with the wider community. The funds will be broken down over 2008 and 2009.

ECU's MBA program has received 5 stars in this years Good Universities Guide for Corporate Links, Academic Staff Qualifications and gender balance for the proportion of Female Teaching Staff.
ECU also scored impressive results (four stars) from MBA graduates who rated the quality, standard and relevance of our program.

Students awarded for industry projects
Leisure and sport management students have been awarded for industry projects completed as part of a professional practicum unit.
Michelle Duffield, Cameron Taylor and Amira Mahmood were awarded Dr Heather McGowan OAM awards for professional practice in leisure and sport management at a function that brought together students, lecturers and industry representatives.
Students who took part in the unit presented posters and portfolios of their work experience projects to guests from a variety of organisations including Parks and Leisure Australia, the Department of Sport and Recreation and the Department of Environment and Conservation.

Public Forum: Public Sector Ethics
Professor Robert Harvey, Executive Dean of Business and Law, has invited the Commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commission, the Hon Len Roberts-Smith RFD QC, to hold a public forum on the role of the CCC.
In his lecture Misconduct...is that all there is?, the Commissioner will discuss the role the CCC plays in maintaining public sector ethics and combating organised crime.

Legal Internships - Aurora Native Title Internship Program
The Program introduces law students to career opportunities in native title and Indigenous affairs, and primarily provides assistance to under-resourced and over-worked Native Title Representative Body (NTRB) lawyers. There are two intakes for interns annually, during the summer and winter university breaks, for 4 to 6 weeks. Applications open in March and August of each year.
Applications are open to law students who have completed, or are currently completing, the property law component of their legal studies. We seek students who are interested in working in native title and Indigenous affairs. Internships are offered at NTRBs and other Indigenous policy organisations as well as other organisations working in native title and related areas Australia wide.
NTRBs are located in: Adelaide, Alice Springs, Brisbane, Broome, Bundaberg, Cairns, Darwin, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Mackay, Melbourne, Perth, Port Hedland, Sydney, Thursday Island

Projects for this scholarship need to focus on topics or issues relevant to WA, and applicants are required to clearly articulate the benefits of this research to the state, as well as Australia.
Valued at up to $A40,000, Fulbright scholarships are open to Australian citizens to undertake research or study in the United States for 3–12 months. Scholarships can be started between 1 July 2008 and 30 June 2009.

Law and Justice gives northern suburbs accessible legal advice
Legal advice is about to become a great deal more accessible to those living in the northern suburbs with the opening of a community law centre on the Joondalup Campus of ECU on the 3rd May 2007.
The community law centre is a result of a partnership between the Northern Suburbs Community Legal Centre (NSCLC) and the School of Law and Justice. Law students in School of Law and Justice programs will work alongside practitioners from the NSCLC to staff the centre.
Attorney General Jim McGinty opened the new NSCLC and congratulated the centre and ECU for the joint project.
“The Edith Cowan University/Northern Suburbs Community Legal Centre is a valuable resource that will advance the education of ECU law students by offering a clinical component to their studies, while also providing much needed legal services to residents in the Joondalup and Wanneroo areas,” Mr McGinty said. The Bachelor of Event, Sport and Recreation Management is a new course to be offered from 2008.
The course will replace the Bachelor of Leisure Sciences, however students enrolled in the course will still be able to complete the existing course. Students in the Bachelor of Leisure Sciences or other courses may be interested in changing into this new course.

The Amiens Business School are offering an Internship and several Grant Opportunities for Faculty of Business and Law students wishing to study and/or work in France.
Grant Opportunities
For students who speak a little French and would be interested in learning more. The Amiens Region offers either 2 halves of a grant (€250/month) or a full grant (€500/month) for students to study for 10 months with Amiens Business School. The size of the grant awarded depends on the credentials of applicants. Applications close at the end of April.
Internship Opportunity
Amiens Business School is offering an internship position in either their International Office or in their Language and Culture department. Accommodation would be offered as well as a €400/month salary. The internship is part-time (~20 hours a week), so the student would be able to attend classes (such as French as a foreign language, or other business classes) for the duration of their intership.

We are looking for two energetic and passionate students who are keen to re-establish AIESEC at ECU - AIESEC currently has representation at only UWA and Curtin in Western Australia.
The roles of ECU's AIESEC representatives will be highly responsible, but also highly rewarding. Students who take up these roles will receive support from AIESEC and the Faculty of Business and Law - with the Faculty allocating an office on Joondalup campus for their use.

ECU is holding a Student Exchange fair on Monday 26th March.

As part of the fair, Mr Walter Egger from the University of WienerNeustadt (Austria) will give a presentation on Austria and the possibilities for exchange with his university.

Business and Law O-Day BBQ and B&L Student Association
Business and Law held the first student barbeque for 2007 to welcome commencing Business and Law students and to launch the Faculty's new Student Common Room.
About 200 first year students stopped by for hot dogs and stayed to socialise, play darts and to face off with B&L staff and other students over the fooz ball table!
Another lunch is planned to inaugurate the B&L Student Association.

Demolition marks bright future
Demolition of the old gymnasium at Mount Lawley Campus has completed Phase One of the new building to house the Faculty of Business and Law.
The building will accommodate staff and students from Churchlands Campus after its closure in 2008. Construction will coincide with the refurbishment of existing facilities to improve the vibrant campus.
Business and Law will consolidate its presence onto Joondalup and Mount Lawley campuses during 2008 in line with ECU's strategic Campus Consolidation Plan. Full Story >>

Presentation: “Corporate Governance and Compliance: What we can learn from actual cases”
Paul Sukagawa, President & Managing Director of Mitsui Iron Ore Development Pty. Ltd., is an international mining executive with renowned leadership abilities and strong business acumen. Paul has also served as Chairman of Japan Chamber of Commerce in WA and Vice Chairman of the International Business Council.
Paul will discuss his experience in relation to Corporate Governance and Compliance issues and strategies used to manage real life complex situations.
