From the Dean, Professor Robert HarveyWords from the Dean

I would like to begin by congratulating our student prize winners for their impressive achievements throughout last year. I, along with many local business leaders were given the opportunity to congratulate the potential these ECU students had already achieved within their university studies. I encourage you all to reach your potential throughout your university studies and remind you that your lecturers and tutors are here to help you with this goal.

The Faculty constantly strives to build working partnerships with industry, helping to connect our students to their prospective employees. These opportunities for work are promoted through our Student Information Centre and their program Get That Job!
Professor Robert Harvey, Executive Dean, Faculty of Business and Law

The new, modern facilities at Mount Lawley support our innovative approach to teaching and learning and will enhance your overall experience of studying at ECU.

Facilities include:  100 seat lecture theatre; case study, tutorial and breakout rooms; state-of-the art computing labs and a postgraduate lounge with fully equipped kitchen. Visit the faculty website for further details.

Deloitte Dream Team

The ECU Deloitte Dream Team pitted their business acumen against nine teams from W.A universities in the grand final on 13th May. The team consisted of five students competing for $2500 prize money against seven other university teams. The competition was judged by senior staff of Deloitte who commented on the excellent presentations with only a few points separating all the teams.

For ECU contestant Zac Meyer, the Business Edge program from the Bachelor of Business provided the knowledge and know-how to effectively answer the problem and present it to Deloitte in an effective style.

“The learning we do in that particular course (Business Edge) was directly relevant and useful in the competition run by Deloitte,” Zac said.

Acting Dean of Business and Law, Associate Professor Mark Stoney had only praise for the ECU team members. “The experience and confidence gained by students will hold them in good stead and their development throughout the course of the competition was remarkable.”

Nicole Musolino from Deloitte said “The ECU students were absolutely brilliant and credit goes to the team Zachary Meyer, Michael Manes, Robert Hardwick, Tammy Williamson and Amar Raithatha.”

FINSIA Mini Olympics

FINSIA Mini Olympics Accounting, Finance and Economics students went head to head with the big boys from St Georges Terrace last Friday at FINSIA’s Mini Olympics.

With only one week to prepare, our ECU team (being the only university participating in the competition) gave it their all against the likes of NAB, BankWest, Rio Tinto, KPMG and many other big name businesses, in a range of sports.

ECU managed to dominate on the volleyball court while the egg and spoon race was best left to the banks.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the competition, a good change from the classroom where crunching numbers is the game.

Law students prepare for national battle

Law students have been battling for the honor of representing ECU at this year’s National Australian Law Students Association Competition to be held in Hobart in July. Three major competitions test students’ skills in negotiation, client interviewing and mooting.

Tania Wenn and Michael Semenyszyn negotiated their way to victory over fellow law students on the 7 May at Blake Dawson Lawyers. Makan Mirzai and Kate Norman of Blake Dawson Lawyers judged the event and offered $1500 in prize money to support the pair in Hobart.

The Client Interviewing competition held before Michael Crowley saw Margaret Au and Biao Hu narrowly defeat Nina Goodwin and Felicia Wong.
Tottle Partners Lawyers have once again supported this year’s mooting competition which will see Musonda Songwe and Kade Rosenthal contend with Grant Narbey and Daniel Coster for the Tottle Partners Cup.

ECU Law lecturer Michael Crowley expects fierce competition in Hobart, however, he believes that our ECU students will deliver an impressive performance come July.

Wise words from a recent ECU graduate

Chelsea JonesChelsea Jones was recently awarded the prestigious Faculty Medal at this year’s annual Student Prizes evening. Throughout her studies Chelsea has been an outstanding academic who recently completed her degree in Business, majoring in Tourism Management and Public Relations.

Who better to ask about the secret to success when it comes to study, than one of our top achievers? So how did Chelsea thrive throughout her five years of study?
“I don’t have the secret to success, all I can say is just do the work. It’s only 13 weeks for semester one and 13 weeks for semester two, altogether that’s 26 weeks. It’s only half a year.

“Read the readings, start the assignments when you get them and try to enjoy the experience as much as you can. The greater the challenge, the greater the satisfaction and fulfilment when it’s done.”

Chelsea is currently enjoying helping youngsters at the Riverview Church as Youth Director.  We wish Chelsea and all our 2007 graduates the best of luck in their careers.
