What is the difference between "study abroad" and "exchange"?
Exchange
ECU students are able to study at an institution overseas and non-ECU students are able to study at ECU.
The period of exchange is usually for one or two semesters.
Tuition fees are paid as normal to the student's home University.
Study Abroad
Tuition fees for units paid - up front - to the host University, rather than the student's home University.
Note: In both cases, students are responsible for confirming an arrangement in relation credit for units undertaken on study abroad or exchange with their home university prior to participating.
Study Load
Students must study the equivalent of a full-time study load in order to obtain a student visa whilst away. The amount of units constituting a full-time load can change from institution to institution and from course to course.
Unit Selection
Students planning to participate in an exchange or study abroad programme will need to ensure they select units from their host institution carefully in order for their studies at their host institution to be recognised by their home institution.
Dependent on their course structure, many students undertaking a study abroad or exchange programe choose to study electives whilst overseas - in which case they will need to ensure that their elective unit selection adheres to any requirements placed on it by their course structure.
Where students don't have the option of studying electives, they must ensure the units they select are similar to units they need to complete within the course and unit sets they are undertaking with their home institution.
