Demolition marks bright future for Business and Law

Visitors to ECU's Mount Lawley Campus may notice more open space than usual this semester. Demolition of the old gymnasium has signalled the commencement of a new building to house the Faculty of Business anThe now vacant site of the proposed new building at Mt Lawley campusd Law and other
areas currently located at Churchlands Campus.

The new building, along with refurbishment of existing facilities at Mount Lawley are part of relocation plans for staff and students moving from ECU's Churchlands Campus in 2008.

The current plan is for the building to be ready for occupation by mid-2008 to accommodate the Faculty of Business and Law, IT Services and the Perth Institute of Business and Technology.

Plans for teaching areas include a 100 person lecture theatre, computer labs, case study rooms, tutorial rooms and breakout rooms. Other areas include a student service area, staff workstations, eLab, postgraduate common room, eCaf and an executive boardroom.

ECU's Architects Office met with several groups in 2006 as part of a consultation process to discuss the design of the building. A group of postgraduate and undergraduate students provided feedback on current teaching and learning spaces and what could be done to improve these spaces for the new building. Consultation with staff members also took place to discuss design of teaching spaces, work stations and administration areas. Consultation with staff will continue in 2007 while plans are being finalised.

The Faculty of Business and Law aims to commence the relocation from Churchlands Campus in stages, with academic staff moving to Joondalup Campus by the end of 2007. Research students will also move to Joondalup to take advantage of closer proximity with the Faculty's academic staff and research centres. Most postgraduate and part-time undergraduate classes currently at Churchlands Campus will be transferred to Mount Lawley Campus sometime in 2008.
