Federal review into Research Training

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Innovation is conducting an inquiry into the research training and research workforce issues in Australian universities, examining the contribution that Australian universities make to Australian research training, and the challenges they face in recruiting, training and retaining quality research staff in Australia.

Faculty academic appointed to national Superannuation Advisory Committee

Associate Professor Marilyn Clark-Murphy, Head of the School of Accounting, Finance and Economics; has been appointed to the recently established Superannuation Advisory Committee.

Professor Clark-Murphy was appointed to the Australia-wide Committee on the basis of her extensive experience and leading research in the field.

Established to provide advice to the Federal Government regarding policy and initiatives that effect the superannuation industry, the Committee will meet approximately three times each year.

Out of the 10 individuals appointed to the high-level committee, Professor Clark-Murphy is one of only two academics, and is the only member from Western Australia. Full Story >>


Workshop: Effective Business Exits for Small Business

Taking the important first steps towards assessing the long-term survival of a small business in Western Australia (W.A) will be made easier for owners and operators in 2008 with the Effective Business Exits Program.

This practical workshop, presented by professionals, is just one of the valuable components available from the Faculty of Business and Law's Small and Medium Enterprise Research Centre's (SMERC).

Small business operators can register for a half day Effective Business Exits for Small Business workshop offering practical advice that small business managers and operators can quickly and effectively apply to their own succession plan, including issues associated with retirement planning, superannuation, tax planning, selling a business and lifestyle issues.

Effective Business Exits for Small Business workshops will be held in Stirling (Thursday 14 February), Mandurah (Wednesday 20 February), Bunbury (Tuesday 26 February), Rockingham (Wednesday 5 March), Midland (Friday 7 March), Fremantle (Wednesday 12 March), Belmont (Wednesday 19 March) and Albany (Thursday 3 April). Dr. Mike Simpson (Senior Lecturer in Business Studies) from the Sheffield University Management School, UK will be presenting a seminar entitled: "Can Small & Medium Enterprises gain a competitive advantage by adopting environmental best practice?"

He will discuss strategies for gaining a competitive advantage; waste reduction; better products and environmental best practice; new business opportunities and customer satisfaction.

Mike's current research interests are in the area of Marketing & Operations Management, particularly for SME's. He has published over 120 articles and conference papers in both scientific and management areas.

The Small and Medium Enterprise Research Centre (SMERC) was established in 1995 as a faculty research centre at Edith Cowan University (ECU) with the aim of promoting and encouraging research into small and medium sized businesses. SMERC is currently based within the School of Management at Edith Cowan University's Joondalup Campus. It is recognised nationally and internationally for research in the small and medium enterprise domain that produces outcomes of significant value to academe and practice. SMERC has developed strong links with industry, the business community and all three tiers of government through support, participation and facilitation of SME activities.

The Indian economy has experienced an average GDP growth rate of 6.8% per annum since 1994. In recent years, this growth rate has increased to above 9% per annum. It is the world's second largest growing economy, and its fourth largest. The question remains: Is this growth sustainable?

ECU wins $310,000 AusIndustry project

ECU Researcher finds nicotine tops youth fears

New research into children's attitudes to cigarette addiction could help develop more effective smoking prevention programs for young people.

A study of 875 boys and girls in Years 5 to 10 found addiction — or loss of personal control — was a major issue for children when considering smoking. 91 per cent of the surveyed children ranked cigarette smoking number one when presented with a list of items which could potentially be addictive — naming it above other drugs, alcohol and gambling.
