Professor Lyn Thomas

Visiting Professor from Edinburgh University, UK (January-April 1998)

Professor Lyn Thomas' education includes a BA. and MA. in Mathematics at the University of Oxford, UK. In 1971 he completed his Ph.D at the University of Oxford. Lectureships and Senior Lectureships at various Universities in Britain in the areas of Operations Research, Management Science, Decision Theory, Game Theory, Applied Stochastic Processes and Probability and Statistics at all levels from first year to M.B.A, followed. During this time and up to the present he continuously acted as examiner, external examiner and assessor and contributed professionally as member of numerous panels and committees within the university and external. Professor Lyn Thomas has extensive publications including technical reports and working papers in the above areas plus a number of conference papers. He received numerous research grants. Professor Lyn Thomas is currently Professor of Management Science at Edinburgh University in the Department of Business Studies.

Other academic contributions include Reviewer for Mathematical Reviews, Referee for numerous journals and publishers, President of the Operational Research Society (1994-95), Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, Invited Speaker at numerous Workshops and Conferences, N.R.C. Senior Research Associateship (US).

Research Interests

Applications of dynamic programming techniques, particularly Markov decision processes, to modelling sequential decision problems.

Credit scoring and behavioural scoring, the developments of new uses of scoring in credit control and marketing and the possibility of profit as opposed to default scoring.

Applications of game theory to real problems involving game theory models of auditing, the use of n-person games to allocate costs in banking applications and using game theory to model the environmental regulation of the energy industry.

Nigel Morkel-Kingsbury

Nigel graduated from Curtin University of Technology as top student in Economics and Finance in 1995. He worked for 12 months as a Business Banker with Bankwest. Previous experience include taxation authorities and tourist/hospitality operations in Australia and Canada. Nigel worked with FEMARC as the Graduate Research Assistant before taking up a lectureship at Monash University.

Research interests

International Trade and Finance, Emerging Stock markets.
