Welcome to the School of Management

ECU's School of Management is widely recognised by students and employers for its tradition of combining academic rigour with practical application in teaching and research. It aims to provide “job ready” graduates with a range of skills and professional knowledge desired by employers. The Leading Edge program introduced into the Faculty of Business and Law undergraduate courses in 2007 will further strengthen professional skills development. The School distinguishes itself through a staff profile combining extensive industry experience with levels of academic qualification and research output amongst the highest in the country. The School is known for its culture of friendly, student-centred teaching.

The School has four main teaching and research foci; management including small business management, international business, management information systems and human resource management including employee relations. Courses at undergraduate, graduate certificate, graduate diploma and master's levels are available in all of these areas. The graduate certificate courses permit entry for students who have significant work/professional experience but no previous tertiary qualifications and allow progression through to the MBA. The School also has a significant input into subjects in the MBA program and offers a number of specialisms within this program.

The human resource management courses are accredited by the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) and the information systems courses accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). Graduates have the opportunity to apply for professional membership of these organisations.

The School has a very active research program with over 30 research students enrolled in PhD’s. Many staff have received major national and other research grants and most are active in publishing in leading journals and presenting papers at national and international conferences. The School offers generous support to research students. Two research centres are housed in the School; SMERC (Small and Medium Enterprise Research Centre) and the We-B Centre (Working for e Business)

Flexible learning options are available in many programs through external on line delivery. Some are also offered in intensive mode where students can attend classes on Fridays and Saturdays. The external option allows students who cannot attend campus classes due to work, domestic or other reasons to pursue courses.

Some programs are taught offshore through alliance partners. This enables teaching staff to keep abreast of international developments and issues. Within Western Australia, the School delivers a management education program for the Police Service at the WA Police Academy in Joondalup. The Centre for Leadership is managed by the School. It runs the Leading Edge Program which is an initiative of the Joondalup Learning Precinct (JLP) partners (West Coast TAFE, ECU and WA Police Academy). The program offers twelve month intensive leadership development delivered through the shared facilities of the three precinct partners' campuses.

Teaching staff in the School of Management are well qualified with over 75 % having PhDs. All staff are in regular contact with the business community through research, consultancy and/or professional associations. Most have exposure to cultural issues in education through teaching offshore in Asia, Africa and Europe. Students also benefit from part-time and adjunct staff who provide leading edge knowledge from industry and the professions.

I am sure the School has something to suit your education needs.
